Concrete blocks thrown onto busy road

TWO motorists escaped serious injuries after concrete slabs were thrown from bridges over the A12.

In the first incident, which happened at about 6.30pm yesterday, a man suffered severe bruising after a slab was hurled from a bridge at the road’s junction with the A130, at Howe Green.

The slab smashed the windscreen of a blue Ford Escort, driven by the 30-year-old, from Brentwood.

Just under an hour later another concrete block was thrown from a bridge at junction 13, at Brentwood, which punctured all the tyres of a grey Honda Civic.

The driver, a 28-year-old woman from Chelmsford, escaped without injuries.

Police attended both scenes, and the force’s helicopter was also deployed, but no suspects were seen.

Chief Inspector Tom Dinent said: “Whoever is responsible for these criminal acts needs to be stopped before someone is killed.

“They can be assured we will use the full weight of the criminal justice system against them to hold them accountable for their actions.”

Police patrols had been stepped up in the area following reports of similar incidents on November 12.
