A KEEN historian and figure in local government hopes a new book will show residents they’re part of a rich history.

Councillor Robert Long, deputy leader of Maldon District Council, has written and illustrated his latest book - Maldon’s People from the Past - after being inspired by “special people” from throughout the town’s history.

Mr Long, who lives in Tolleshunt Knights and has been involved with the council for 30 years, has written a number of articles over the years about prominent personalities from in and around the Maldon district and decided to put them all together for the book.

Characters in the collection range from St Cedd to Maldon’s first mayor, John Pond.

The articles are purely personal choices and reflect Mr Long’s favourite local historical figures.

He said: “English history is my subject.

“I came to Maldon in the 70s and researched local history considerably - that led to me writing the articles.

“I’m hoping the stories and personalities will be interesting for people who have lived here (Maldon) all their lives and those who have just moved here - they’re fascinating people.”

Maldon’s People from the Past is Mr Long’s second book.

His first, Good Ghosts of Maldon, was released in 2005 and he is hoping for similar success with his latest offering.

He added: “You’re always taking a chance with whether people will like it or not.

“People in Maldon are part of a long history and I hope they like it.”

Mr Long will be signing copies of the book from 10am on Saturday November 29 at WH Smith in High Street, Maldon.

It will also be available from the Tourist Information Centre in Wenlock Way, the Maeldune Heritage Centre in Market Hill and the Heybridge Basin art gallery priced at £3.
