Chelmsford's new mayor sworn in

A NEW mayor has taken office in Chelmsford.

Tom Willis was elected as the new mayor of Chelmsford for the next 12 months, at a full council meeting on Wednesday May 14.

A keen gardener and choir singer, Mr Willis took over from Nicollette Chambers, while his wife Jane became the new mayoress.

The new mayor's charities for the next year were chosen by Mr Willis as Chelmsford Mencap and the Samaritans.

In proposing Mr Willis, leader of the Lib Dems Mike Mackrory, spoke of Mr and Mrs Willis' work in several local groups.

He said: "Everything I have said demonstrates the enormous breadth of Tom and Jane's long-standing commitment of working for the community."

A former vice-principal of Basildon College, Mr Willis lives in Stock and is a ward member for St Andrews.

A new deputy mayor was also chosen by councillors. Alan Arnot, a ward member for the Patching Hall was sworn in as the deputy.
