CHELMSFORD Council has set up an emergency generator to deal with power problems.

The authority has experienced power loss to some of its building following the explosion at the sub station in Bishop Hall Lane on Wednesday.

Some IT and telephone lines are down.

A spokeswoman for the council said EDF energy was installing a back-up generator today (Friday) which should ensure that critical services such as housing and benefits are running as usual this afternoon and all council services should be back to normal on Monday.

Leader of the council Roy Whitehead said: "While residents are experiencing some difficulty in contacting the couyncil by telephone or e mail today, most council facilitiesa nd services are operating as normal.

"The council's business continuity plan has been successfully activated and I am confident local residents will not be adversely affected."

An emergency message has been put on the council's main switchboard number.
