A STROKE awareness day is taking place in Chelmsford.

The collection and information event takes place at the High Chelmer Shopping Centre on Saturday May 17 from 9am to 5pm.

Each year an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. Stroke is the third biggest cause of death in the UK, and the leading cause of severe disability.

The event is one in a series of fundraising and awareness raising activities taking place throughout the country during the month of May which are aimed at raising the public's awareness of stroke.

Tim Edwards of The Stroke Association said: "We are delighted to be able to hold this fundraising collection and Stroke Awareness Day event at the High Chelmer Shopping Centre in Chelmsford, and we would urge local people to come along to learn how to prevent stroke and avoid becoming a statistic of the country's third biggest killer."
