A MAN who died in the electricity substation fire is believed to have come from the Colchester area.

An Essex Police spokesperson said it is now believed that a man from the Colchester area was the lone fatality in the explosion and blaze in central Chelmsford on Wednesday.

A post-mortem examination of the man is due to be carried out today, with a formal identification of the body then set to take place.

Police are working with firefighters, site owners EDF Energy and the Health and Safety Executive to establish the cause of the explosion and fire at Bishop Hall Lane.

A spokeswoman for EDF Energy, said: "The emergency services believe that, sadly, a member of our staff has died at the scene. Our thoughts are with the family of the person involved." However, this has not been confirmed by Essex Police.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call police on 0300 333 4444.
