Witham: CCTV proposed to boost town centre coverage Witham: CCTV proposed to boost town centre coverage

An extra CCTV camera has been proposed outside a busy pub to provide better coverage of the town centre.

After a survey by police and councillors, a recommendation was made to install a new camera opposite the JD Wetherspoon pub in Newland Street.

But Witham Town Council wants to prioritise its spending on tackling the issue of public drinking before investing in more CCTV.

Go to the Battesford regularly - rarely seen any sign of trouble although admittedly I am not often there late at the weekends! The drink is cheap and so you are enticed into drinking more than you otherwise might I suppose!

What a complete and utter waste of money. Witham Town Council is absolutely right to resist. Better to spend the money on the general townscape to encourage more shops to invest. CCTV spells "trouble" when none exists. Pleasing environment says "a place that cares". We might not have won the Portas money but that doesn't mean we can't read the report and follow the principles, most of them don't even cost much money.

Braintree got the money because Witham is deemed a "failing town" in shopping terms, i.e. not worth bothering with - and whose fault is that - Braintree District Council for siphoning everyything off for themselves and Witham Town Council selling out for a swimming pool. Enough already.

It's all well and good installing a CCTV camera, but will it actually be switched on? Remember the story about Rag Tag & Bobtail's front window being smashed and the CCTV pointed right at it being useless as it wasn't even on.
