Braintree: Families take part in Chernobyl Children's Project
Families hosted 12 children who continue to be affected by the Chernobyl disaster as part of a month long break.
The Mid Essex group of the Chernobyl Children’s Project UK provides recuperation holidays for children living in heavily contaminated parts of Belarus.
Following the accident at the nuclear power plant in 1986 large parts of land and water remain heavily contaminated and damage the children’s immune systems.
The group from the Gomel area are staying in the north Essex area for a month and visiting places such as Frinton and Barleylands craft centre near Billericay.
Suzanne Dore, of School Road, Rayne, said: “We became a host family for the first time this year and we have loved every single minute of it.
“We had two delightful nine-year-old boys staying with us, they are lovely boys and great fun.
“The language barrier hasn't been a problem.
“The thought that we are helping the children’s health is very rewarding.
“We would love to do it next year too.”
