Railway workers will vote this month on whether to take strike action over Olympic bonus payments.

The rail union RMT confirmed on Monday that ballot papers would be sent to its members working for Greater Anglia.

It comes after RMT representatives rejected a Greater Anglia offer on Olympic reward payments.

Staff at all stations run by Greater Anglia, including seven stations in the Braintree district, will take part in the vote.

Ballot papers will be sent to workers this week, with the votes closing on Thursday, July 19.

The RMT wants Greater Anglia to agree Olympic reward agreements similar to those agreed by other rail franchises such as First Capital Connect and c2c.

Bob Crow, RMT general secretary, said: "It is a scandal that Greater Anglia has decided to try and force their staff to work longer and harder for little or nothing in return.

"We all want the Olympics to be a success but we cannot have fairness on some train companies and a slap round the face on others.”

A Greater Anglia spokesman said: “We’re disappointed that the RMT union is intending to organise a ballot.”

for once i dont care i am staying with a friend in a different area to avoid all the stress but i hope this lot dont get what they want my friends are having to travel through all this do they get any financial reward for the stress they will go through just for travelling to and from work? no

Bhudeeka, I think I know what you're saying! I am also taking time off work to avoid travelling through Stratford during the Olympics although sadly I won't be able to avoid it all. It is rediculous that people are getting bonuses for doing their usual job just because it is the Olympics - who cares?

The fact that people can still strike if they don't like their job is utterly outrageous.
If I don't like my job, pay or conditions I leave ... these guys are paid by commuters who will have an utter nightmare getting to and from work, unlike them who don't even pay for their travel.
GA should not be held to ransom nor have to pay more.

I lived through the 1984 Olympics: we brought futons to the office as we thought we'd never be able to hack the traffic. Surprise! What would normally take me 40 minutes became a 20 minute drive! It was WONDERFUL!

You never know - it may turn out the same in London this year. I hope so for all your sakes. And, London has a phenomenal mass transit system - unlike the City of Angels, especially back in '84.

Nonetheless, the whole issue of bonuses for doing one's regular job is sheer bald-faced and brazen extortion and frankly could be considered "terrorism" under certain laws in other (western, industrialized) countries. Although not surprised, I continue to be appalled by the attitudes on display by the seventies-minded British workers and the others in society with such an entitlement attitude. I am, however, completely confident that ("call me") Dave will get it sorted though, right?
