A bowls club has celebrated the official handover of its green from the district council.

Mill Lane Bowls Club, in Witham, has taken on a 21-year lease on its home venue, which had a grand opening last weekend.

The handover took place after Braintree Council installed a brand new green at the site.

The event was attended by around 50 people, including members of bowls clubs in Bocking, Silver End and Hatfield Peverel.

Mill Lane club secretary Gloria Ford said: “There was a 'spider' game to start the afternoon's bowling followed by 36 bowlers playing 'triples' on the six rinks.

“Teas and light refreshments were served by the Chairman's wife and her helpers in the newly spruced up pavilion and our thanks go to all of them.

“We now look forward to the new season with great expectations.”
