Braintree: Bats put the brakes on housing development

9:00am Sunday 19th February 2012

Bats and reptiles have put the brakes on a proposed housing development.

Developer Capita Symonds has withdrawn plans for 29 homes on the former William Julien Courtauld Hospital site, London Road, Braintree.

In a letter to Braintree Council, associate planning director Sophie O’Hara Smith explained they needed to carry out a reptile survey in April and a further bay survey in May.

She said: “We intend to re-submit the application and provide this additional information.”

The original plans were submitted in November last year on behalf of the applicant, Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust.

Capita Symonds wants to demolition of the old hospital buildings and properties at number 42 and 44 London Road.

The developer then wants to build 29 homes, including affordable housing.
