Pest controllers are dealing with numerous rat infestations across the Braintree district.
Homes, supermarkets and outdoor public areas are all suffering with rats.
Following complaints, Braintree Council has baited and is monitoring areas in Weavers Park, Bocking End, the area around the pond in Panners Farm in Great Notley, as well as the River Walk and railway station in Witham.
A council spokesman said: “Complaints were received that rats had been seen in the vicinity of two major supermarkets in the Braintree district.
“These stores are being treated under contract by a private pest company.”
