Taxi drivers across the district will have CCTV cameras fitted in a bid to improve safety after a series of attacks.

Three drivers have taken the opportunity after a series of incidents in Witham, with two drivers targeted by masked men armed with hammers in February.

Braintree Council has secured funding from the Braintree District Community Safety Partnership, which has enabled taxi drivers to have cameras in their vehicles to deter crime.

Wendy Schmitt, deputy leader with responsibility for community safety and licensing, said: “I’m pleased we can provide this extra security for both taxi drivers and customers with thanks to the Braintree District Community Safety Partnership.

“We have listened to taxi drivers’ concerns and believe this is a positive step to reassuring and protecting children and adults using taxi services across the Braintree district.

“I would urge any other taxi drivers across the district who would like to take up this offer to install CCTV in their vehicles to contact the council so we can ensure a safer environment for more drivers and passengers.”

More funding is available to provide other taxi drivers with CCTV in their vehicle. Call the council on 01376 552525.
