CCTV cameras have been installed in three taxis in a bid to improve safety for drivers and passengers.

Two attacks have recently happened in Witham with masked men armed with hammers targeting taxis in February.

But now, Braintree Council installed the cameras in the hope they will deter criminals and reassure customers who use the taxis.

The council secured funding from the Braintree District Community Safety Partnership for the equipment.

Wendy Schmitt, cabinet member for community safety and licensing, said: "I’m pleased we can provide this extra security for both taxi drivers and customers with thanks to the Braintree District Community Safety Partnership.

"We have listened to taxi drivers’ concerns and believe this is a positive step to reassuring and protecting children and adults using taxi services across the Braintree District."

More funding is available to provide other taxi drivers who would like CCTV installed in their vehicle.

Any drivers who wants a camera should call the council on 01376 552525.
