Nearly 1,000 cyclists raised more than £30,000 for a cancer charity at a fundraiser in Hatfield Peverel.

On Sunday, the riders took part in the fifth annual Ride for Helen event in aid of Helen Rollason Cancer Charity.

Participants came from all age groups and abilities with five distances available - from six miles to 100 miles.

Kate Alden, fundraising manager for Helen Rollason Cancer Charity, said: "The rain held off, the winds were light and the sun shone in the afternoon – it was perfect cycling conditions for our riders.

"We couldn’t organise such an amazing and positive event without the help of our dedicated team of volunteers, staff, sponsors and supporters so thank you everyone for making the day so successful.”

Charity patron Ian Twinley allowed riders to use the grounds of The Crix, Hatfield Peverel, as the starting and finish point again this year and every participant received a medal for their efforts.

Regular cyclist Kevin Smith, of Great Dunmow, said: "As a keen cyclist, I have taken part in various cycle rides in the past and I have to say the organisation of Ride for Helen has been fantastic with the routes well mapped-out and clearly signed.

"This year, there is a much more important reason for me to be raising money; my mum has in the last few weeks been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer, with only a short time to live; it’s come as a huge shock as you can imagine.

"So this year I have decided to raise money to help fight cancer for those where the illness can still be treated and give valuable time to other families in need."
