More than £110,000 could be spent on upgrading some of the district’s most dangerous roads in the interests of safety.

A new report by Essex County Council reveals a list of casualty reduction projects identified for priority funding this financial year.

On the list are several schemes across the district, with funding set to be approved in the coming days.

In Braintree, a £26,000 revamp of Coggeshall Road and Railway Street is being planned, which will see pedestrian refuges built and pavement improvements made to prevent vehicles losing control.

Give way and cyclist warning signs could be put in Aetheric Road, Braintree, at a cost of £17,000.

To combat dangerous driving conditions, particularly in wet weather, £10,500 is set to be spent on marker posts and chevron signs in Church Road, Rivenhall.

Around £19,500 will be spent realigning a junction along Witham Road with Temple Lane, Cressing.

Ward councillor James Abbott (Green, Witham Northern) welcomed the Rivenhall and Cressing schemes.

He said: “The Witham Road junction is extremely dangerous. All that is there is a bit of grass with a sign, which has been knocked over recently - showing the need to do something.

“The problem in Church Road is that vehicles come off the road and go into people’s properties.

“The funding is a step in the right direction and credit to the officers at the county council.”

A feasibility study is set to be conducted into the possibility of putting in a separate right turn only signal in Millennium Way, Braintree.

The study will cost roughly £10,000.
