Plans to build more than 300 homes, a care home and a community facility in Coggeshall have been submitted.

Bovis Homes consulted with residents last year over the possibility of building 365 homes on land off Colchester Road, near the A120.

The developers have now submitted two different bids.

The first would involve 335 homes and a community hall with nursery for 40 children.

The second includes 318 homes, a care home for 80 residents and a community hall with nursery.

The application states: “Coggeshall, as one of the largest villages in Braintree, is identified as a key service centre where new housing development, specialist housing and employment provision and other uses may be most appropriately located.

“Not only is the application site off Colchester Road right in principle, the scale, character and local distinctiveness of the development proposed and detailed within this application will make a significant contribution to a range of identified needs.”

During the consultation concerns were raised about the development’s proximity to the A120 by campaign group Save Lives Not Time.

Coggeshall Parish Council also indicated residents were concerned about the impact on surrounding infrastructure.

However a spokesman for Bovis Homes said the village offers an “extensive range of shops and other facilities” for new residents.

The statement adds: “Its centre and primary facilities include village shops and pubs, and other retail services. In terms of proximity to services, the site’s location is certainly sustainable.”

Braintree Council will make a decision later this year.
