A CELEBRATION has taken place at Braintree Library to mark 20 years since it opened.

The civic reception at the Fairfield Road building involved groups such as Mencap, Braintree Easy Riders and the Essex Fire Service.

The Dolphin Women’s Institute also attended and presented the library with a knitted model of the building.

Stephen Kirby, chairman of Braintree District Council, said: “This event pays tribute to the many organisations and myriad of volunteers who play a part in making Braintree a vibrant community.”

John Aldridge, chairman of Essex County Council, said: “At a time when there is so much pressure on public finances, we are proud to have maintained our 74 libraries around the county.

“They are important resources for our citizens, real community hubs and welcoming public spaces.”

Former staff were asked to share their memories of the current and former library.

The memories were put on a display and will be on show until the new year.
