A POPULAR community club is celebrating its 90th birthday with a special programme of family friendly events.

Kelvedon Labour Club has been based in Kelvedon High Street since 1927.

The historic building used to be an old workhouse until 1837, and has also been a pub over the many decades since it was built.

Teacher Helen Corke secretly bought the property, along with the meadow behind and five cottages, for £850 back in 1927, and the Labour Club was born.

Built as a place to encourage social interaction between villagers the goal was to try to improve the lives of those who live in Kelvedon. The club has invested in the village and owns the allotments as well as part of the Co-op car park.

During elections the club arrange things like lifts so people can get to polling stations, but despite the name the club has no official political allegiances.

A spokesman for the club said: “Kelvedon Labour Club is a family friendly members club in the centre of our lovely village. It is our aim to provide all of our members with a warm welcome, in a relaxed and comfortable environment.

“We pride ourselves on providing a good atmosphere and very competitively priced beverages. We welcome non-members to come in and have a look round at our extensive facilities; you will be very surprised at what we offer.”

Next week the club will is hosting a programme of events to celebrate its birthday with live music, family fun days and much more.Visit www.kelvedonlabourclub.org.
