A FREE open weekend at a swimming centre has been hailed a success by councillors, despite a pool closure days earlier.

The free open weekend at Braintree Swimming and Fitness Centre welcomed hundreds to take part in fun activities and try out the newly refurbished facilities.

Over the weekend, residents had the opportunity to try the main pool and the children’s leisure pool as part of the pirate-themed weekend.

Alex Green, contract manager at Fusion Lifestyle, said: “The open weekend was a huge success, we welcomed both members and non-members new to the centre and hope we demonstrated what brilliant facilities we have here right in the heart of the community.

“We know the pool closure at Braintree Swimming and Fitness in- convenienced our customers while the unavoidable work was carried out and we hope the open weekend has been a way to thank people for being patient and understanding.

“We hope all our visitors enjoyed themselves as much as the team did.”

Activities included canoeing, swim assessments, face-painting, watching a life guard display, winning prizes, trying canoe water polo and taking part in a pool session.

District councillor Peter Tattersley, responsible for health and communities, said: “It was great to see so many people come along to the open weekend and try out the newly refurbished facilities whilst enjoying some free fun activities.

“I would like to thank members and customers again for their understanding and support over the closure period and hope you continue to enjoy using our great leisure facilities in the district.”
