A BABY girl with a rare chromosome disorder will take part in a sensory 1km challenge to help boost her fundraising.

Six-month-old Imelda Mower made 27 trips to hospital in the first 13 weeks of her life for a disorder so rare it doesn’t have a name.

She was born with a muscle weakness which can make babies appear floppy, and developed seizures.

Specialists at Broomfield Hospital and Great Ormond Street have been working to monitor her brain, heart, kidneys and eyes.

Her parents, Rachel Mower and Mike Clapp, of Aylesbury Drive in Great Notley, teamed up with Just 4 Children, to launch Unique Imelda to fund therapy for her.

In September Imelda and her parents will head to London to take part in the Parallel London Super Sensory 1km challenge in the Olympic Park.

The course includes a light tunnel, bubbles, wind chimes and smells and sounds.

Mum Rachel said: “We do lots of therapy every day to lessen the impact her condition will have on her life including therapy for sensory processing disorder. So this super sensory 1km is a real challenge for her.

“She has shown time and time again that she is a determined, strong willed and a fighter.

“We have every confidence in her that she will achieve what she wants to, as she is a bright little girl.

“Imelda’s condition is largely an unknown one.

“What we do know is she has many traits similar to cerebral palsy. She has hypotonia which is decreased muscle tone.

“This makes feeding and swallow- ing difficult, it also affects her moving around and it’ll make reaching her milestones very challenging.”

Imelda is on a special diet to help build her up and make swallowing easier and will need an operation on her hip when she is older.

The Unique Imelda appeal is for physical and occupational therapy and any equipment Imelda may need such as specialist car seats, chairs and a buggy.

So far £8,777 of the £15,000 target has been raised.

A host of events have been held to help fundraise for Imelda including collection tins in shops, quiz nights and donations with more challenges planned.

Rachel added: “We are astounded at the amount of support we have had so far. I feel very lucky to be surrounded by fantastic family and friends. My family have helped and supported us so much and my friends are going to incredible efforts.”
