A BUSINESSMAN has been forced to temporarily close his restaurant after customers were put off by roadworks on the A120.

Salik Miah, owner of the Spicy Swan in Bradwell, says that Highways England’s scheme of maintenance works between Braintree and Marks Tey has decimated his trade since they began in January.

A number of overnight closures have been introduced as part of the scheme, with an escort system in place for residents and businesses.

But Mr Miah has criticised the management of the works.

“They have put these signs up everywhere saying that the A120 is closed and that it just putting people off completely,” he said.

“It is obvious that the road is shut but not obvious that our customers can still get here.

“I have spoken to the other business and everybody seems to have the same problems.”

Mr Miah has now made the decision to completely close the restaurant until the roadworks are completed.

He continued: “When we heard about the closure we decided to take up the challenge of staying open but it is just not worth it.

“Since the middle of February it has been completely dead for us. We cannot justify remaining open when it is like this.”

A Highways England spokesman said: “The vital work we are carrying out will improve safety and provide smoother journeys for the thousands of drivers who depend on the A120 and A12 every day.

"Continuing to improve customer service is a key imperative of Highways England, and we are happy to discuss any concerns or comments people have about our road works with them directly.”

Work should finish by summer.
