WALKERS have branded a “wonky” walkway pointless, because it is full of holes.

The mysterious ‘path to nowhere’ in John Ray Park, Braintree, started last year as part of a major networking project.

The unfinished path, which had said ‘to be continued in 2016’, now connects Skitts Hill to Rifle Hill.

However residents are unhappy with the work, saying the new path is uneven.

Resident Jonathan Davies said: “The new paths are very welcome but disappointing after the ‘to be continued in 2016’ was painted.

“The difference between the first part of the path laid in 2015 and the latest additions is shocking.

“The path is uneven, there’s a step of layers of tarmac in one place, the material doesn’t reach the top of the kerbing meaning it’s dangerous for cyclists and when it rains the dips in places are so deep that puddles form the whole way across the path.

“The surface has also been damaged, and not repaired, by machinery being driven back and forth on it.

“It’s very disappointing when this scheme had such great potential to improve access to the town and station across John Ray Park.”

He said it destroyed the point of the path, particularly in winter.

After 410 people commented on their preferred routes during a con- sultation, the route was chosen.

Wendy Schmitt, councillor responsible for environment, said: “The final stages of laying the top surface on the path will be complete within a few weeks, making it smooth, even and puddle-free.

“The new path will provide access to open spaces for years to come and will see more people getting outside and exploring, whether they are cy- clists, walkers or commuters.”
