PARENTS are up in arms about a 'ridiculous' coat policy at a school in Witham.

Parents of Maltings Academy students were notified by text and over Facebook, saying only black coats could be worn.

A message was published on the school's Facebook page, making parents aware it was part of the uniform policy.

The school stayed open during the snow days last week, but students were not allowed to wear coloured coats.

Simon Morgan, who has a daughter in Year 9 at the school, said: "I think it's ridiculous.

"If it's cold and my child needs to wear a coat she will wear what is warmest, no matter what colour it is.

"I'm sure some parents can't afford multiple winter coats, whoever decided that needs to live in the real world.

"My daughter was more worried about it than I am, it's another thing to stress about."

His daughter wears a black coat, but Mr Morgan said she needs a new one and it will be any colour she likes.

The school's uniform policy states pupils must either have a black academy coat with the school logo, or "any other plain black coat".

It also says hooded tops are not allowed.

Mr Morgan added: "Why shouldn't they wear hoodies?

"They keep your head warm and again why should parents spend out when they already have something to do the job?"

Simon Rudd, who has a daughter in Year 10 at the school, said he appreciated school uniform being worn inside the building, but coats were different.

He said: "I cannot see why the colour of a child's coat on their way to and from school has any impact on their ability to learn.

"Also children come in all shapes and sizes from families of varied incomes- a school specific coat may not be possible for everyone to obtain.

"I would like to know the educational benefits to a coat that is not worn whilst in lessons."

The school has been contacted for comment and we are awaiting a response.
