A PARADE and drumhead service will take place in Witham on Friday July 1 to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

The event is the latest in the programme of WWI centenary commemorations organised by Witham Town Council in partnership with the Royal British legion.

The parade congregates at River Walk by Guithavon Valley Church at 6.45pm before setting off at 7pm.

A salute will be taken by Vice Lord Lieutenant of Essex Jonathan Douglas-Hughes Esq, Frankie Ricci of Braintree District Council, Witham Town Mayor Patrick Horner and Witham MP Priti Patel.

The traditional drumhead service, which begins at 7.30pm at Witham Town Park, will be constructed by the Essex Army Cadets Corps of Drums and the ATC Band will also perform.

Throughout the service, the Essex Yeomanry Band will accompany the singing of the choir of St Nicholas Church.

Everyone who takes part in the parade will then be invited in to the Royal British legion on Newland Street for refreshments.
