Pancakes fans with their frying pans raced down the streets of Coggeshall today in the annual pancake race.

Children showed off their pancake flipping skills in the half-hour race from the clock tower in Stoneham Street to Queen Street.

Coggeshall Chamber of Trade and Commerce have been organising the event for more than ten years.

Richard Stride, who works at Norman’s sweet shop in Coggeshall, is involved in the event every year with his wife Hazel.

He said: “It’s been really encouraging the last few years, mums and their children always take part.

“Different age groups from young children to their parents like to get involved, it’s a fun atmosphere and a good crowd always lines the streets to come and watch.”

Categories included the under six's, seven to 11's, the highest tossed pancake competition and the piggyback pancake race.

Ava Picknell, 6, won the highest tossed pancake contest after throwing her pancake about 12 feet and catching it.

Competitors challenged each other for goodie bags containing batter mix and chef’s hats.

Hazel Picknell-Stride said: "It was a fantastic day, lots of people turned out and they all really enjoyed themselves, it took a lot to clear up the aftermath but it didn’t rain which was great.”
