An army of volunteers took to the streets to crack down on litter for national Community Clear Up Day.

Nearly 50 helpers from McDonald’s, Dominoes, Braintree Town Football Club Academy and Braintree Council’s street cleaning team targeted litter hot-spots in Millenium Way, Galley’s Corner roundabout, the Discovery Centre, and the play park off Flora Road in Witham.

Last Friday’s effort was part of a national event aimed at tidying up the UK’s streets in time for summer.

The Braintree Council street cleaning team also continued their litter-pick on Saturday along 12.7 miles of verges beside the A120.

Cherry Lewis-Taylor, franchisee at McDonald’s, said: "I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered and for their hard work - it’s vital that we all do as much as we can to constantly improve and maintain up-keep our local community areas, whether that’s through regular litter-picks in our local area or getting involved in larger activities like this."

Councillor Wendy Schmitt, Cabinet Member for Place, said: "If every person picked up one piece of litter, the difference made would be astounding.

"We have some lovely areas in the Braintree District and we want to make sure that they stay that way."
