Council leaders have responded to criticism their authorities are not doing enough to support Witham.

Witham Chamber of Commerce, which has about 60 members, is launching a campaign, Fight for What’s Right, because it claims Braintree Council and Essex County Council have not done enough to support the town, encourage visitors and tackle issues such as flooding and planning roadworks.

Kevin Bentley, county council cabinet member for economic growth and infrastructure, said both councils work together to support and encourage business in Witham, including introducing fibre broadband in 50 postcode areas so far to improve internet speeds.

On the flooding in September, the council said it cleans drainage systems it is responsible for regularly but short term flooding was unavoidable during extreme weather.

Chris Siddall, Braintree Council cabinet member for prosperity, said there are hopes to relocate the town market and create a town square.

Robert Mitchell, deputy cabinet member for place, said parking fee changes were designed to be fairer and the council is also investing in the car parks.
