Braintree: Council warns against copycats after fish put in fountain Braintree: Council warns against copycats after fish put in fountain

A council has urged people not to follow the lead of a retired taxi driver who left ten goldfish in a town centre fountain.

Les Mizen, 77, put the goldfish in St Michael’s fountain, at the top of Braintree High Street, earlier this month, claiming they were a gift for the town’s children.

But Braintree Council, which removed the fish within 24 hours, has said the chemicals in the fountain mean fish cannot survive in it.

A spokesman said: “Obviously we were looking to re-home the fish, but they died because the water is highly chemicalised.

“We would please ask anyone not to put fish in the water - people might not realise about all the chemicals in there.

“We hope no one thinks this is a good idea and decides to copy what happened before.”
