Witham: Morrisons plans second bid to expand store

Fifty jobs could be created if a supermarket’s second effort at extending is given the go ahead.

Morrisons wants to extend its store in Braintree Road, Witham.

Its first planning application was rejected in March this year because Braintree Council was worried it would impact on the rest of the town centre, diverting trade from Tesco, and prejudicing investment in the Newlands Shopping Precinct, which it said was a better location for a supermarket.

Morrisons is now holding a public consultation tomorrow and Saturday for its latest proposals.

Full story in this week's Witham and Braintree Times.

The council should not be interested in whether the application is "diverting trade from Tesco". This is purely fair business. Witham needs a bigger supermarket, Tesco has not got the space to expand. The Council should be looking to improve the amenities for Witham residents. Oh, no, I forgot, they only care about Braintree residents and their five or more supermarkets.

The Planning Committee were quite happy to divert trade TO Tesco from a number of local car valeting businesses when approving plans for Tesco to replace 9 of their over used car park spaces with a hand car wash facility.
