Being lost in the middle of nowhere as a hooded figure walks towards you calmly swinging an axe sounds like the start of horror film.

And in fact the analogy is not far off as it marked the beginning of our trip into the world of The Cursed where we were given a sneak preview of the new scare mazes for this year’s Halloween event.

Our tour officially began as the Ethel, the resident ghoul, explained that this year’s event follows the story of Lucifer- an inmate at The Asylum.

As we waited outside the cell door in the dark, cold night we could see a murky shadow move inside and gnarled figures curling around the bars.

Walking into the asylum with our arms outstretched to feel our way through the darkened maze was just about the last thing we wanted to do.

As soon as we stepped inside we were greeted with bangs and shrieks and an unnerving snorting that sounded as if it was coming from right next to you.

As we ventured through the twists and turns we were chased by the spooks who suddenly appeared around the next corner, popped through holes in the walls and at one point even dropped down from the ceiling in front of us.

Haverstock Manor, the haunted house, is equally as scary with the new addition of The Cellar which scared visitors will reluctantly climb down to.

There are at least 10 mazes at this year’s event, which also boasts the UK’s longest squeeze tunnel aptly named Chlostrophobia.

The grand finale remains top secret but Ethel promised visitors a spectular and unique end to the event.

More than 50 scaremakers-jokingly named to jump on the Olympic bandwagon- will be hidden in the depths of the mazes to scare the 1,050 visitors expected to pass through each night.

Litres of fake blood, tens of fake bodies and severed limbs will also add to the spooky atmosphere.

The event, which is its fourth year, will be held at Cressing Temple on October 26, 27, 30 and 31 between 6.30pm and 10pm.

Visitors are advised to book in advance and that the maze is not suitable for under 12s.
