A community champion whose adventures included a chance meeting with Adolf Hitler has died.

Over the years, Ariel Crittall, 97, devoted her time to numerous causes in the Braintree area, including The Friends of Essex Churches, the Citizens Advice Bureau and Braintree Museum Trust.

Ariel was one of the most interesting people I have ever had the privilege to meet, such a wonderful lady who always had time to chat and tell you a story. She also liked everyone to have some fun in their lives. Ariel was a great letter writer and never had a problem telling people exactly how she felt, she was still going to Braintree Museum Trust meetings up until her 90th year. Ariel will be sorely missed but never ever forgotten.
