Witham: Swan-nappers on loose?

The swan escaped unharmed The swan escaped unharmed

Walkers have claimed to see people trying to catch a swan on a duck pond.

Witham Town Council has had a couple of unconfirmed reports in the last three months.

The most recent was on Friday morning, when a dog walker called the council’s park rangers after allegedly seeing people wading in the pond off the River Walk in Guithavon Road.

Swans are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is an offence to intentionally injure, take or kill a wild swan.

Anyone caught faces a maximum sentence of six months in jail or a £5,000 fine.
