Witham: Historic market charter may never have existed
4:00pm Wednesday 10th October 2012 in News
The current site of Witham's Saturday market, in Lockrams Lane
A royal charter allowing a market to be held in Witham may never have existed, according to a Government lawyer.
Traders and town councillors want to move the town’s market to Newland Street, claiming Witham Town Council should be allowed to manage the market due to the historic charter.
But, after the town council asked the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) for a history of the charter, it has been revealed there is no evidence of it being valid since the 16th century.

Once upon a time there was King who ruled over his people but saw that the amount of taxes they had to pay was leaving them with hardly anything.
Huum, thought the King, the peasants may revolt. So he decided to grant them a way to make money and keep it without paying a tax on it. He decided to allow them to run a Market and the document that gave them this right was called a Royal Charter.
Now sadly the King (lets call him King A ) died and King B took over and let the rule stand.
King B was followed by King C on his death and so it went on.
Then, one day a Prince in another Country wanted to be a King but didn't want to kill his father to become King so he thought....If I invade another Country so that I can become King of there.
And so it came to pass that the Prince invaded and killed the King and then become King W.
Now King W didn't like King A and so made a proclamation that ALL King A's Royal Charters were now invalid and the people would have to apply for a new Royal Charter.
Sadly, it would appear, Witham did not apply for a new Royal Charter and so their charter given by King A was now useless.
I hope you like my story.

No, you haven't touched a nerve, I was just expressing an equally valid view that happened to disagree with yours. No need to react so defensively.
