Braintree: Students meet paralympian gold medallist

Students received an inspirational visitor last week.

Paralympian, Dan Bentley, dropped in to meet young people at the College at Braintree to talk about his experiences during the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games.

The gold and bronze medallist studied BTEC National Diploma in Print Publishing at what was Braintree College between 2005 and 2007.

He gave students a demonstration of boccia, a special sport played only by paralympic athletes, in the Sports Hall, and showed off his medals.

The students, who are all 19-23 years old, are studying a course called Springboard which is designed for adults with learning difficulties.

Their topic this term has been the Paralympics and each one chose an athlete to research.

Tutor Sarah Allen, said: “The students entered College after the summer break really inspired by the Paralympic Games and keen to research some of their sporting heroes.

“To meet an Olympic medallist really brought their project to life. They are thrilled Dan is able to spend time with them.”
