Just over 60 cases of bullying in Braintree district schools were reported to Essex County Council in the last four years.

The figures, obtained by the Times through the Freedom of Information Act, show six were reported in 2011/12, 20 the year before, and 19 and 16 respectively in the previous two financial years.

And 26 children across Essex overall were withdrawn from mainstream schooling to pursue home education between September 1, 2011 and August 31 this year due to alleged bullying.

Essex County Council said 502 children were taken out of school for home education that year, according to figures obtained by charity Red Balloon, which plans to build a learning centre for severely bullied children in Braintree.
