Braintree: Families tempted by special holiday deals in term time

Defiant parents are continuing to pull their children out of school for cheaper holidays, despite a huge rise in the number of absence fines.

Mums and dads claim it is cheaper to book a break in term time and pay a fine, than face inflated school holiday prices.

There has been a 400 per cent increase in the number of fines dished out over the past five years.

They have risen from 51 in 2007/2008 to 261 last year.

Headteachers said holiday companies’ prices are part of the problem.
