Braintree district: Mencap playscheme revived

Disabled children and teenagers are back at play again after a respite scheme was given a reprieve.

Braintree Mencap was given a £23,039 transitional grant from Essex County Council after originally losing out on funding from the council and NHS Mid Essex.

Parents, Braintree Council MP Brooks Newmark and Braintree Council leader Graham Butland backed a campaign to call for a rethink.

The charity’s play and activity respite scheme at Charles Leeks House in Coggeshall Road, Braintree, had to close for the summer after running out of cash but is now open on Saturdays and will last until next year’s summer holiday.
