A six-foot long python, which was believed to have escaped from a house fire, has been found.

Fire crews were called to the house in Pledgdon Green, Henham, near Stansted, at 5.15am this morning.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire, and the thatched section of the roof was reported to be 100% alight.

Crews tackling the fire have also been carrying out salvage operations to recover personal items from the property.

The RSPCA is also in attendance searching for the snake, which is believed to have escaped when the fire broke out.

Essex County Fire and Rescue confirmed at 10.20am the snake had been found.

A spokesman said: "The python has been found - it fell down into the garden area as firefighting operations were taking place."
