Road chaos has been predicted for Saturday’s international puppet festival as 11 straight weekends of rail disruption begin.

Engineering works mean no trains will run between Witham and Shenfield every weekend until the end of November.

It is feared the impact of the work will cause road congestion on Saturday, when part of Newland Street is closed to traffic during the festival.

David Bigg, chairman of the Witham and Braintree Rail Users’ Association, said: “We are going to have rail and road gridlock on that day.
