UPDATE: Man arrested after serious crash UPDATE: Man arrested after serious crash

A driver has been arrested following a road crash in which a 15-month-old girl was seriously hurt.

Firefighters had to cut the toddler free and she was taken to Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel by ambulance, where police say she is currently in a stable condition.

She has suffered a serious head injury, an East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said.

A man and a six-year-old girl suffered minor injuries in the collision at 7.15pm yesterday on the B1024 Coggeshall Road, Earls Colne.

All three were in a black Vauxhall Zafira, which was in collision with white Daf lorry, are local to the area.

The lorry driver, a man, also suffered minor injuries.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “This was a very delicate incident to deal with for all emergency services involved.

"Police, fire, ambulance and doctors worked very hard to treat and stabilise all the casualties before they were taken to hospital for further care.”

A 43-year-old man from Southend was arrested at the scene on suspicion of careless driving and released on bail pending further enquiries until November 12.

The road was closed until about 2am while initial investigations were carried out.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who may have seen the vehicles involved prior to the collision, to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or email collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk
