Shoppers delighted at the opening of a popular high street clothing store in Chelmsford.

The ribbon was cut at the Primark store in the High Chelmer shopping centre at 9am on Thursday and it did not take long for items to fly off the shelves.

Scores of people queued outside wanting to be the first to grab hold of the merchandise inside the store which has become popular in recent years due to their budget clothing and accessories.

One of the first people inside was 71-year-old Heather Elliott who felt it was about time Chelmsford had a Primark.

Mrs Elliott said: “This is actually the first time I have ever been in a Primark, but whenever I watch the TV the fashion guru’s always talk about the quality of the clothing’s price and style.

“I am a bit worried about how this store could effect other shops in the High Street as it will be very popular.

“But Chelmsford is a city now and I think it is great that a place like Chelmsford finally has a Primark of it’s own.”

The 40,900sq ft store which is split over two floors has taken 11 weeks to construct and is the Irish-based company’s 241st shop to open worldwide and has created 238 jobs.

I hate Primark with a passion and will not be going into this shop. The fact that Chelmsford is now a city does not call for an immediate need to be established by a Primark.

If there's one thing Chelmsford lacks it's a music scene - a few mainstream, overpriced bars don't cut the bill. I want to see a live music venue, something real that can breathe life into the 'city' center. Anyone who has been to the Arts Center in Norwich can get the idea that I have in my head - a church conversion that forms a brilliantly intimate venue, I went there recently to see 'We Are Scientists' and it really brought home how much we are missing and how far I had to travel to find this sort of experience. We are a city now - lets live it!

sauol91 what a snob you are there is nothing wrong with primark they are much nicer stores than lidls and nettos that just look like streets stalls plonked in a shop and being a city is nothing to rave about and live music? hardly a need for soceity

Its not being a snob, who would want to buy cheap, wear it and throw it clothes from a jumble sale type shop where everything lays on the floor!!!

Perhaps the people shop who shop there have very little money & no choice in where to go to buy clothes. Have you ever actually been in a Primark store? I have & I've never seen the goods laying all over the floor.

Walk past the one in Lakeside, you can't see the floor! Also when will people realise you get what you pay for, surely more costs less in the long run!
