Braintree: War veteran's home on the market

The Chantry The Chantry

An historic home that belonged to a war veteran who was awarded the Military Cross is on the market.

Lt Col Michael Mann commandeered a locomotive just outside Dunkirk during the Second World War to retrieve a wagon-load of ammunition behind enemy lines.

He bought The Chantry, a 500-year-old timber framed home in Stebbing, in 1947 with wife Diana, a member of the aircraft pioneering De Havilland family.

After the war, Lt Col Mann taught Spanish and classics at Felsted School and campaigned to protect Stebbing's beauty, including campaigning against gravel extraction.

The house has been put on the market following his death earlier this year. It is being marketed by Mullucks Wells.
