Town councillors want to see proposals to turn off street lights overnight in action before deciding on whether the scheme will work.

Essex County Council wants to turn street lights in Braintree district off between midnight and 5am to save energy and cash.

The scheme is being extended after trial periods in Maldon and Uttlesford districts, which have been in force since 2007, were deemed a success.

Busy roads, junctions and roundabouts will remain lit, but other roads will be plunged into darkness overnight.

Town clerk Mark Squire said: “The official response was to let Essex County Council go ahead, and to see what the feedback was from them.

“Members decided residents should be consulted again once the scheme has been introduced.”

Mr Squire confirmed all street lights controlled by Witham Town Council, a total of about 70 in the town centre, would be kept on.
