Family businesses are blaming a council for losing them trade as a result of unexpected roadworks.
Road repairs in Maldon Road, Witham, began on Monday and are expected to continue until tomorrow evening.
But businesses believe customers are staying away because Essex County Council did not inform the public about the start of the works.
Lisa-Jane Spence, who runs the tea room at Olivers Nurseries, Maldon Road, says her business did not receive a single customer on Monday morning.
