Sports projects for children are under threat because the charity service that runs it is closing.

Crime reduction charity Nacro runs free football tournaments in Witham, Great Notley, Braintree and Halstead as part of its Braintree Community Sports Project.

But the project is folding at the end of the month, which will mean Nacro’s share of the funding will also go.

A Nacro spokesman said: “The Nacro Braintree service is due to close at the end of September this year.

“Nacro is committed to providing effective services in this area that will reduce crime and reoffending, and we are currently looking at funding streams to ensure that this will continue.

“We will do all we can to support those currently using the service and where possible divert them to another appropriate scheme.”
