Braintree district has the highest number of smokers in the county with almost one in four lighting up regularly.

According to a report released by Essex Insight, as part of its Essex Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, 24 per cent of the district’s adults are smokers.

This figure is the highest in Essex, with the lowest being Rochford where only 10 per cent smoke.

In 2011/12  4534 people from mid Essex set a quit date with the Mid Essex Stop Smoking Service - 2894 went on to quit of which 652 came from the most deprived areas in Braintree.

... and of the percentage of under-25s, how many of them smoke? THAT'S what I find strange, frustrating and depressing. And I say that as a smoker - albeit of cigars.

I would say that every other person I see on my walk across the City of London every morning and evening is smoking. Young women (fat and thin) seem to account for most of them. A truly revolting habit. It's unhealthy, stinky, expensive - why?
