A gran, who was starved of oxygen for almost 30 minutes following a massive cardiac arrest, has praised the paramedics who saved her life.

Jean McDonald, 65, of Chapel Hill, has made a miraculous recovery after doctors feared the worst and told her family to say their final goodbyes- they even took locks of her hair.

The doctors expected Mrs McDonald to die within 15 minutes of removing her breathing tube and she was marked 4.5 out of 5 on the brain damage scale.

But more than a year later Mrs McDonald is living every day to the full surrounded by her family.

She said: “I just want to thank the paramedics who saved my life, and they did save my life."

Earlier this month it was revealed that the East of England Ambulance Service are among the best in the country for cardiac survival rates.

Figures show that the service was second in the country, with a survival rate of 24.7 per cent.
