RESIDENTS have had council tax and business rates payments taken from their accounts four days early.

The installments, which should have been collected on Monday September 3 have been taken today.

The Council says it has informed the banks and funds should be returned to people’s accounts tomorrow.

A spokesman said if anyone’s bank account goes overdrawn because of the error the council will refund the charge.

The actual installment will then be taken on Monday September 3.

The council has apologised for any inconvenience or difficulty caused.

Not such a clever move Braintree Council!!

Most salaried people who have a monthly income get paid on the 1st of each month.
Others like myself, set my accounting to allow payments such as Council Tax to be paid on the 1st or first WORKING day later.

People who don't read this web site might be over drawn and not know they can claim back the charges.

I have worked for 30 years in various companies and been paid monthly but never on the 1st of the month. In my experience people are generally paid around 24th ot 25th. Surely it is sensible to have some float in your account (if you can afford to) to cover this sort of thing.

I think the point is that the council took the money out early without warning but if I wanted to pay my direct debit after I get paid (the 3rd or around that depending on weekends), they wouldn't let me do that. Anyway I always have the council tax money still in my account at the end of the month.

stop whinging. they have admitted the error and have sorted it out. If you can't cope financially with paying a couple of days earlier, I suggest you have bigger problems to worry about.

That's the problem allowing other entities to debit one's account instead of simply setting up an automatic payment that YOU control. It's my account and I will not allow anyone to debit it. If something arises whereby I don't have the necessaaries, then I can halt the process and avoid all this sort of hassle.
