A Braintree mother is spearheading a campaign to save the Essex Police mounted unit.

Sonia Mills, 34, of Rushmore Drive, along with two friends, hopes to stop plans to disband the unit in September by showing the amount of public support for the police riders.

Almost 450 people have signed up to the Save Essex Police Mounted Unit Facebook page in just two days and petitions have been placed all over the county.

Mother-of-two Mrs Mills, who has long been an avid supporter of the unit, said: “I think it is fantastic, I didn’t realise that there was so much public support out there.

“It is fabulous.

“We are hoping that the response from the public proves to Essex Police and the police authority that it is a valuable resource, that has a lot of backing from the general public and it would be a real loss if they let it go. "
